Getting Started with Wazuh SIEM

Using a home security lab to understand alerts and event investigation.

What Wazuh does

Wazuh is a security monitoring platform that can collect and analyze events from endpoints and infrastructure. A homelab is a useful place to learn alert triage and log investigation.

Build a safe test environment

Start with systems you own or are authorized to test. Confirm time synchronization and network connectivity, then connect a test endpoint and verify that its events arrive in the dashboard.

Practice investigations

Generate benign, controlled test events such as a failed login on your own lab VM. Record the timestamp, source host, rule, and relevant event details. Avoid assuming every alert represents a real attack.

Document the outcome

A useful investigation note explains what happened, the evidence collected, why the event mattered, and what action was taken. These write-ups make strong portfolio material when sensitive details are removed.
